Department of Orthopædic Surgery

Adult Reconstruction Fellowship

Welcome to Richmond. It’s a nice place to spend some time, with lots of opportunity to learn. The VCUHS fellowship is somewhat unique in that it provides experience in both a tertiary and a community hospital setting.

This provides exposure to very complex problems, but also provides training on more straightforward joint problems, and teaches the fellow efficiency techniques that practice in the current medical environment requires.

We attempt to teach comprehensive treatment of joint disorders from nonoperative methods through arthroscopic and less invasive techniques and through to revision arthroplasty. We feel strongly that physicians should focus on improving the quality of patient care, and consequently teaching research techniques is an important part of the curriculum. It is our goal to prepare the fellow for a successful orthopædic career whether as an academician or in private practice. Thank you for your interest. We look forward to seeing you in Richmond.

Virginia Commonwealth University's MCV Adult Reconstruction Fellowship Mission Statement:

Teach comprehensive reconstructive procedures for the hip, knee, shoulder, and elbow such that the surgeon acquires the expertise of an adult reconstruction orthopædic specialist.

Demonstrate professional excellence in diagnosis, surgical judgment, and performance of surgical procedures and perioperative care.

Operate within an atmosphere of orthopædic innovation and technological advantage.

Cultivate effective communication skills through interacting with residents on the ward and in clinic, through teaching in resident conferences, and through research presentations at regional and national meetings.

Strengthen the fellow’s clinical and basic science research techniques and hone critical analysis skills for interpretation of literature whereby graduates learn to recognize unanswered questions in reconstructive orthopædic and successfully formulate research protocols to answer those questions.

Promote scholarship, lifelong learning, and the advancement of orthopædic knowledge.
